2010 Competition - Judges
Members of FFAA Board of Directors nominate respected fibre artists and
teachers from the Edmonton area to serve as judges for each competition.
Potential judges are invited to an information session where our aims and expectations are presented.
Candidates willing to let their names stand are chosen by secret ballot.
Judge's Comment:
The submissions for 2008 Focus on Fibre Art were both gratifying and disappointing.
In reviewing the entries, each was examined in turn and given a rating of between one and three. Then the artist’s statements
were read and considered in light of the submitted work. These were also “graded”. Finally, following discussion with the
other judges, grades were agreed upon and “1st, 2nd, & 3rd ” were chosen in each category.
Overall the submissions were gratifying and the quality of both the workmanship and the statements was very good.
Sometimes the statements over-reached a bit and were more eloquent than the works themselves. It is better by far that the
work speaks for itself and a mention of the inspiration can be sufficient.
The disappointment was fewer entries than in previous years.

Judge's Comment:
It was an honour to be selected to be one of the Judges for this prestigious international competition. I have viewed each of the
shows that Focus on Fibre Art has held since they began and am gratified that the calibre of this show attracts
international entries. At the same time I believe that in Alberta
and especially in Edmonton we have very strong competitive artists
in each of the fibre art categories. I would like to see more local
artists take the time to create and craft a piece of work for this
competition. It is both an honour to have a work hung because of the
exposure to a wide audience and a learning experience to have the
feedback from people who are very knowledgeable in their fields.
The quality of the individual works in the 2008 show was very good and some took our breath away. As there is a lead time of a year
it provides the individual artist with ample time to create a piece that echo’s the theme. I encourage our local artists to support
the efforts of this show which brings together all the fibre arts in Edmonton.
