About Us
The Focus on Fibre Art Association is a society sponsoring a biennial competition and show of fibre art. Our goals are to promote fibre artists, to create an awareness of fibre as art and to highlight the benefits of creating fibre art.
“Fibre Art” is defined as any artistic presentation with fibres as the main medium, for example stitches and painting on cloth, fibres woven or knit together. We have eight categories of fibre art including traditional rug hooking, quilting, needlework, textile design, hand knitting, cloth dolls, tapestry/weaving and wearables. Original pieces as well as articles made from a kit or pattern are welcome.
Entries of slides, prints or digital images are sent to a Selection Committee for evaluation. The selected pieces in each category are invited to Edmonton for further evaluation by a panel of 3 judges. Quality of images will influence the selection. Artists receive a written critique from the judges on each of their entries. The artists have an opportunity to offer original entries for sale.
As far as we know, there is no other single competition and show in Canada which includes eight different fibre mediums. All finalists are displayed in the main venue with selected pieces displayed at smaller galleries in the area. Each biennial competition and show requires 1500 to 2000 volunteer hours to produce.
Our Board of Directors meet the first Tuesday of the month. Meetings are open to all. Please join us and bring a friend.
